Family, friends, school staff, and school leaders gathered inside W.K. Kellogg Auditorium on May 29 to celebrate, as 41 students received their diplomas during W.K. Preparatory High School’s graduation ceremonies. The theme of the night centered around second chances and resiliency, reflecting on the stories of these high school graduates. School principal Calvin Williams opened the evening with an emotional speech for his students. Williams fought back tears with his words of inspiration. “Each of you has been a lighthouse in your own way. Shine bright and boldly. Let your resilience be your legacy.” BCPS Superintendent Dr. Kim Carter also addressed the students with words of encouragement. “Your journey at W.K. Prep is proof that every step is important.” Several students also spoke, including Dalviere Garrett, who reflected on his appreciation of his teachers, saying, “We gather here tonight as testimonies of the beauty of second chances.” Twin brothers Dominic and Demetrius Carter also addressed their peers, with Dominic saying, “I am thankful to have had teachers who cared about me and wanted me to succeed.” Ausenico Arriaga highlighted the importance of persistence, stating, “If you really want to graduate, you just have to go get it.” Anna Courtright rounded out the student testimonials with her words of reflection. “There were moments when giving up seemed easier than pushing through, but I kept going when the odds seemed stacked against me.” The tone of the ceremony was uplifting, with the message of being surrounded by those who have faith in you and believing in yourself can lead to positive results.
I started running October of 1998 at the age of 29. For nearly two decades I have written a monthly column for the running community where I live, titled "Just Another Runner's Perspective." The focus these writings is how running relates to life. I also chronicle running stories of individual runners titled, "Just Another Runner's Story." My theory is that everyone has a story that can inspire others. There are many examples of this in the running community.
